Officer, specialist or man. That, and to wait for the final Graduation Parade where I’ll be throwing my cap into the air. I suppose throwing a cap is ordinary enough, but I’m really looking forward to it because it marks the end of this period as a lousy recruit. A recruit’s life is not bad, really, but it will be a pleasure to move on and not be bossed around any longer. “Any recruits here? I need some help.” At 2 am in the morning. Uh, disgusting.

What I will miss is Rocky Hill camp. When we first moved in, we thought our camp was merely a deserted outpost in the middle of the jungle (which isn’t too far fetched, because it’s the old, abandoned SISPEC camp anyway… in the middle of the jungle). On the other hand, the recruits over at the Ladang HQ were getting laptops, internet and all sort of other out-of-this-world stuff. We thought we were worse off, but I think I really enjoyed the stay at Rocky Hill and I’d easily choose it over Ladang… Who wants laptops in the BMT anyway? It’s an extra weight to look after. Rocky Hill was wonderful because the bunks were huge, the air was cool and fresh, good scenery, and no high ranking commanders to watch out for. It was also good to be able to catch glimpses of one or two good friends in neighbouring Quebec and Yankee companies there.

Three coolest things in BMT:

1. Throwing a hand grenade. I was lucky because I wasn’t even supposed to throw it at all…was on Att B. I can tell you, the feeling of holding a real, live explosive thing in your hand and being afraid of it, then throwing it and feeling all that fear leave… is an amazing experience.

2. My encounters with animal life. The most interesting incident was digging my shellscape and finding and nest of eggs, about 8 or 9 large white ones, the size of an M&M chocolate. Not the small no-kick M&M's, it was the size of those M&M's with peanuts inside… maybe slightly bigger. I smashed one with the blade of my digging apparatus and found a snake inside. At least it was a long body with a bulging head. There were no feet at all to be seen, but my sergeant said it could be a lizard with its feet not fully developed. I was, and still am, hardly convinced, but I didn’t have a choice and shifted the eggs somewhere else and slept in that shellscape that night. No mama snake came to disturb me, thankfully… Besides that, I did see a long brown snake sliding across our field camp site once. Also, we saw a few wild boar, a monster centipede crawled up the latrine wall centimetres away when I was squatting down relieving myself, and I once crawled into bed in my bunk and found a bee inside the blanket. Luckily, nothing misfortunate happened - I didn't get stung or anything - so all those incidences became vivid, unforgettable memories to talk with friends about.

3. Having an awesome BMT company, Zulu Coy. We had wonderful commanders, especially our OC, who was like some angel always watching out for us and explaining things to us… I think my platoon performed pretty well, on the whole. We received a lot of praise from our commanders, and generally we weren’t pumping very much. Zulu was also champion for Games Day, and the feeling is great when your company wins and over two hundred people, commanders included, are ecstatic. I do think we’ll be crowned best company in the coming week. Hopefully. But even if we’re not, we’ll no doubt be too busy throwing our caps up to be disappointed.

Freedom

Another seven days and I’ll be enlisting into the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Spent the last few months very blissfully. Caught up with friends, ate a lot of good food, did the things I dreamt of doing during my two years studying for A levels. For one, I had a backpacking trip to Malaysia with some close SAJC friends. Just four of us, without a car, but with the keys to my mum’s Perak house. We relied on coaches to get around. Stopped at Genting and KL too for the attractions/sightseeing/theme park. Real awesome. Below’s a pic of the twin towers at night, which was a lot prettier than I expected.

Also, I spent one and a half months working at the HDB. The job paid really well, 7/hr for doing simple admin work, and the office staff there were exceptionally nice to me. During my final two days, they sent me off with a party, treated me to lunch, and gave me presents. I think that is wonderfully extravagant; I was just a temporary office helper. Thank you God for such great friends at the job.

Comically, I worked overtime every Friday for six weeks - because no one told me work ends half an hour earlier on Fridays. Christmas and New Year’s for me is a good excuse to party and catch up with friends. I love the festive food too, like turkey and wine (delicious).

For me, this new year is special because JC life is over and done with. I suppose one thing I learnt from two years of pre-u education is that one’s rewards are often proportional to the effort one puts in to something. You reap what you sow. I mean, SAJC wasn’t a particularly good school, but I really enjoyed the time I spent there. I suppose a large part of that is because I wanted to be there in the first place. As a result, I’d stubbornly see the good in everything, even when lectures were plain dull and when lessons weren’t any better. Which isn’t a bad thing, because it made school life very much more enjoyable. On the other hand, I certainly didn’t consider CCA part of “school” and happily skipped every CCA session I could. Consequently, I’m rather envious of people who have close friends from their CCAs. Like the rugby guys or the soccer girls. I’m guessing the reason they’re so close to each other is because toiling and training together after school though thoroughly exhausted and brain-dead from a day of books builds strong friendships.

Which shows it’s always good to give one’s best. Hopefully that’s something I’ll take into the new year. Anyway, readers, have a wonderful 2010. :)

Teddy bears never go out of fashion

<img style="display:block; See, the thing I go for in music is lyrics. I adore songs with good lyrics, and conversely, I’ll just stop listening if I don’t like what’s being sung (like say... Avril Lavigne). This is one song I really like because the way it talks about life is so close to the heart it just makes you sit up and stare.

Faust, Midas And Myself
Switchfoot (Oh! Gravity)

This one's about a dream
I had last night
How an old man tracked me home
And stepped inside
Put his foot inside the door
And gave a crooked smile
Something in his eyes
Something in his laugh
Something in his voice
That made my skin crawl off

He said, I've seen you here before
I know your name
How you could have your pick
Of pretty things
You could have it all
Everything at once
Everything you've seen
Everything you'll need
Everything you've ever had in fantasies

You've one life
You've one life
You've one life left to leave

I woke up from my dream
As a golden man
With a girl I've never seen
With golden skin
I jumped up to my feet
She asked me what was wrong
I began to scream
I don't think this is me
Is this just a dream
Or really happening?

You've one life
You've one life
You've one life left to leave

I looked outside the glass
At golden shores
Golden ships and masts
With golden cords
As my reflection passed
I hated what I saw
The golden eyes were dead
A thought passed through my head
A heart that's made of gold can't really beat at all

I wanted to wake up again, I wanted to wake up again
Without a touch of gold, without a touch of gold

I woke up as before
But the gold was gone
My wife was at the door
With a night robe on
My heart beat once or twice
And life flooded my veins
Everything had changed
My lungs had found their voice
And what was once routine
Was now the perfect joy

You've one life
You've one life
You've one life left to lead

I like the way the chorus changes from "you've one life left to leave" to "one life left to lead". Sometimes we’re just so dissatisfied with our situation we don’t realize that life isn’t all that bad. That being said, I’ve decided to stop complaining about my blotched chem practical exam. And look for what life has that’s worth celebrating, instead. Like, today afternoon it was raining heavily, but there were some really good-looking rainbows in the sky after that.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; ประเทศไทย <3

The last time I was there it was May and the sun was warm, the fields were a shocking green and everything shouted growth. That was the first time I saw rural central Thailand and I thought the rice paddy fields looked beautiful. I’ve never seen such a bright, real green before. (no photos to show though, unfortunately) This trip, I had the fortune of seeing the same fields from the same vehicle (thank you, Blink and parents) and it was winter. The green was all gone and everything was swathed in shades of blue, grey and dark green instead; and yet, though it was a different season, everything still looked wonderful. Not beautiful in the same way, but certainly no less beautiful than before. Is it possible? Perhaps creation was made to display God’s majesty, year-round.

Anyway, my thanks really goes out to all my friends in Bangkok who were so gracious and kind for the three days that I was there. What I was expecting was just a bit of shopping and catching up, but not overwhelming hospitality from so many people so often. And certainly not trips out of Bangkok! Such generosity. You guys are the best. Come to Singapore, I’d gladly give up my bed again.

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="country-region"></o:smarttagtype>This was really fun. It was a wonderful experience because each star was so beautiful, but beside that, they seemed to remind of the greatness of God. Just them being there and filling the sky in their countless hosts is something to gape at. But wait! – that’s not all. Some stars measure millions to billions of light years from earth, meaning that if one were to travel to a star at the speed of light, it could well take a million years to arrive. That’s brilliant, but what fascinates me more is that, conversely, light takes a millions of years to travel from stars to our gazing eyes. So as we look up into the night sky, it isn’t the present we see, but a reflection of the past, years and years before. And each point of light is a different part of that past. One star might be light that came from a thousand years ago, and the star next to it could well shine light that came from a million. Awesome, isn’t it?

I was at Batam for the annual camp for church leaders. We stayed at Harris Resort for five whole days, and never stepped out of it. It might have been nice to go out for a while, but it was alright keeping to the resort: the food was good, the activities were plentiful and the hotel even accepted Singapore dollars instead of Rupiah. (smart) And of course the teaching was excellent and God’s presence was so strong those few days it felt almost tangible. But what made our stay fantastic was the incredible service of the resort staff. Most seemed genuinely pleased to serve us, and one or two even went out of their way to serve us better. Take Maria, each time someone left the resort she was right there accompanying them. She even sent us right to the ferry terminal on the last day, full of smiles. Besides her, I once met a guy in uniform who looked like the cook, and he brought me on a walking tour through all the buffet items. He looked zealously proud of his creation, and only left me when we reached the sauces – “that one quite nice”. It was. What excellence! What joy, even in work! I want to adopt that attitude. It makes the world brighter. And I’m sure Jesus had that same attitude, too.

Another great thing is that this short trip has restored a love in me for the body of Christ, God’s church. I’ve learnt that church doesn’t have a perfect environment. Far from it, people get hurt there sometimes; I’ve been hurt by it myself, too. But in Batam I caught a glimpse of what God would want it to be – an environment where people love each other and love God – and I’ve come to desire to stay and contribute to such an environment. It’s awesome knowing all you guys at church.

Biennale, and promos.

I got my results back today and I’m glad to have been promoted. Calculating the score was easy enough, all I take are four subjects and they’re all H2, so it’s a possible twenty points each, adding up to the eighty total perfectly. I cleared the thirty-five points to promote minimum by a good margin and I’m content. I think it’s interesting that almost two years ago, I was so absolutely fixed on getting into SA, and here I am now! You would think it’d be satisfying to be able to fill in the blank for something you want to know – dog meat tastes ___, or bungee jumping is ___ – but if were to ask me how living out a dream is like I’d probably just say it’s all just a bit too real; the way the fantasy of a beautiful girl at a distance disappears when she comes close. JC life can sometimes be unpleasant and exams are tough, but paradoxically, it’s probably only when one realizes dreams aren’t flawless, but accepts the flaws anyway, that the dream becomes far more beautiful than it was before.

Take the outing with my KI class to the Singapore Biennale just yesterday. You wouldn’t believe the trashing we got for sacrificing PW lesson time to embark on our own little adventure outside, though it was rather inevitable that if we wanted to go at all this month with our busy schedules someone was bound to complain. I think it really was worth going though, and it’s these unpleasant experiences (of risking stuff and getting caught) as well as the good ones that make school life so favourful.

Of the biennale I have only praise for, though I still think that that which evokes disgust cannot be art, like say the framed picture we saw of a bloodied head with drooping eyeballs and jutting teeth. I think art should be noble; appreciate-able. Like this art piece that had hundreds of miniature trees and plants stuck into a bed of sand, all black against the dusty yellow background of the sand grains. It already looked awesome, but when we walked past the exhibit we noticed all those trees and plants had their backs painted with colour, and the view from the back looked even more grand. The piece I thought funniest was this:

an art piece I would have probably missed if I’d been in a hurry, since it was outside in the open while all the other pieces were displayed indoors. All the artist displayed was a few alien figures, but the genius lay in its chosen background, courtesy of the Singapore government – you know how people always say the Supreme Court looks like an alien ship?

Perhaps aliens control the highest levels of our bureaucracy.

Oh, do you know the power of Korean drama serials? Not too long ago, the Straits Times published an article on an expedition by train from Singapore, through a few ASEAN countries, to China. I thought it was fascinating, because traveling off the beaten track by choosing to ride the train instead of taking a commercial flight revealed so much more about the areas that news team passed through. I’d like to do that too. Or perhaps, rather than passing through countries, it might be wonderfully fresh to stay or work in another country and to learn its culture and language. I’ve always admired England for being the centre of the world’s largest empire, and because a few very inspiring teachers I had long ago were British, but I already think and dream in English. Perhaps Thailand, Spain, New Zealand, Latin America ... or even China! Haha.

Well, that’s wishful thinking for now. Maybe I’ll have the chance in future. Right now, I’m happy with the life that I have. Today’s the last day of a week-long break from school. I only went out once, and that was on Teachers’ Day with my old primary school classmates, but it was a good time we had. I’m glad that we’re still close after so many years.

Picture from Valerie. Recently, I’ve been having the time of my life.

In the spirit of econs, my new-found love:
On the one hand, life’s getting tougher what with the jc workload and how everything’s just packed together (I always thank God for Sports and Fitness Club for getting me home slightly earlier most schooldays), but on the other hand, I’m really enjoying this stage of life.
Why? I prefer the jc system over the one in swiss cottage. I have great people as friends, not just in school (but you guys from church as well! and the 6A brothers, of course) And SAJC’s a great school. When I talked to her, lizard also mentioned feeling this sense of belonging in St Andrew’s. It makes being in the school worthwhile. Yeah, I think it’s all that and a little more. Regardless of what I mentioned, there’s always reason to smile because, well, this is the day that the Lord has made, and why not rejoice in it? :D

What have I been up to lately? Well,

Caught a few matches after school. This is the girls' soccer semi finals against MJC.

And I watched the rugby finals! Couldn't miss it. This is SAJC vs ACS (I) @ the Padang. My heart’s with Team SAJC, but I think the ac guys played much better and deserve to win, fair and square. It was called iCamp because the i stood for Identity in Christ. The camp was a secondary segment camp held at the GB Centre at serangoon, and though it was a secondary camp there were plenty of new P6s. I was supposed to go help lead one of the groups, that is, play the games with them, bunk with them, and just be there for them. I don’t remember having any thoughts about being a camp leader (maybe I was too caught up with JC work) but I’m definitely glad I agreed to it. I really enjoyed the time I spent with my group, even though the group took a long time to warm to each other and the leaders. There’s a certain gratification in living for someone other than yourself, and simply put, I believe it’s because seeing somebody you care about smile makes you want to smile too.

Funnily enough, the parts of the camp I enjoyed most weren’t on the program. I liked singing in the bunk during free-time and talking late into the night with Chong Hao and Clarence. And I liked bathing at night in the cold water and eating food out of a packet. I think it reminded me of BB. (:

Today, I was sitting at the church hawker with some other iCamp-ers helpers after we broke camp. Samuel was next to me and he just turned 17 today. Someone said “I can’t believe I’m 18 already” and someone else said “yeah, same.” I’m going to be 17 in four days, and you know, I can’t believe I’m so old either. It seems only yesterday that I was the cute P6 in the camp.

Oh speaking of which, please don’t get me anything for my birthday! I think I’m really more than blessed already. :D

After a week and three days.

What we took after dinner with our sec school classmates. My cell’s going through a few changes, for one! We’ve been a mixed aged group cell for two years already, and now we’re separating into two by age. I think it’s great news! To be able to split after two years shows that the cell’s grown. In numbers, at least. And if people have been coming and inviting their friends, it shows evidence of growth within, as well. :D It’s also been my first few days of school at SAJC. I really enjoyed it. SA’s a school with great people and great heart. One thing that’s been troubling me, though, is that I opted to take KI, and the way KI is taught is really quite dismissive of Christianity. What’s ironic is that SAJC is a Christian mission school, and half of the class does believe in God. It’s nothing new I guess. We know that there’ll always be people to malign the word of God, but I do believe that at the end of the day God will still be sovereign. Anyway, I’m glad for a chance to try KI in the first intake. And I’m glad this IS the first intake. We can get away with being a bit blur. Hahaha.

I’m bursting to say this! I’m really excited about 2008. I think this year’s going to be great. Well yes, there’ll be a lot of responsibility and work up ahead, but won’t there always be? I’m just glad this is a new year that God has given, and I’m hoping to enter each day with bright eyes and a happy heart.

Mission Trip to Bangkok, Thailand. 14 - 22 Dec 2007

I’m keeping this short. Why? The more I write, the more long-winded I get. (:

What is a mission trip? To me, it’s fundamentally all about fulfilling the Great Commission. That is, to go into the world and make disciples. What can we, or anyone, do in eight days? Nothing much, really. But what can God do using our eight days? Great things, I’m sure. Yeah! Our trip was mainly to support Pastor Derric from church. The other key people were Stephen, another missionary, and a Thai pastor.

Hmm. Not too different from any other, but beautiful because I’m convinced God is going to bless it richly.

This is the view from our hotel. More specifically, from Franco and Eugene’s room, where all our team meetings and team breakfasts were held, and where there was a balcony overlooking the city. I distinctly remember just sitting down and watching the cars zoom past one morning (Monday, if I’m not wrong), and thinking what a privilege it was to be there.

The aurora rays of Thailand. They call it ‘sunset’, I think.

To the right, you can see a white building which is a flat in the first residential area we visited. It’s the home to mainly middle-income Thais, and it’s where Derric hosts his kid’s club. We had the honour of joining his kid’s club party as oversized kids from Singapore and playing with all of them. I really enjoyed it. Mainly, I was struck by the simplicity of it all. We weren’t doing much, just hosting a few games and singing a few songs, but each boy and girl that came left different, and that’s what matters. Through even small things can we be a blessing to others.

Here, I sit in awe of Chong Hao’s singing.

This is the only picture I took of our Ajan’s house. Ajan is our Thai pastor, and we call him Ajan because it means pastor in Thai. To us, he was like THE one and only Ajan, so once we started calling him that, it stuck. Except to Eugene, who used ‘Pastor Ajan’, but let’s not go there… You can see a wide opening with metal shutters nearby, so it looks like the garage, but it’s actually the adjacent vacant lot that pastor’s neighbour agreed to lend him for the week. Very timely, because the Christmas party was planned within this period, and we needed a space to host it. So what happened was that we used both the space in front of Ajan and his neighbour’s house, and it turned out perfect to fit our banner, a plastic roof and a makeshift area for us to perform. As Stephen Keller put it, “it’s quite amazing” how everything fit into place.

This is a picture I took standing in the hotel thinking. There was a song that was playing in my mind at the time. The Thai song we learnt to sing to the people we met. It’s called piam rak, which, if I’m not wrong, means ‘great love’. And though it was a song that was meant to minister to the Thai kids and parents, I think it was definitely a song that ministered to me. Through my lousy Thai, I could pick up a few bits and pieces of the message. “Yesu” – Jesus; “Rak” – love; “dai” – can; or able; “khon" - man. And that’s the Christmas message for you.

Yeah! Emo.

The one thing I won’t forget about the trip are the people I met. The team for one. Brilliant people – we really managed to get along well despite being so different. But the people that impacted me the most are the people who resonated the love of God in their daily lives. Yeah, the love of God. It’s hard to explain. It’s not rational, certainly. But I could see it, really clearly, in people. In Pastor Derric, who put aside his life in first-class everything Singapore to live in Thailand, and serve and love its people. In Ajan, who put up with all our rubbish with many smiles and a ‘mai bpen rai’. And in the way you can see he’s pastor not only to his ministry team, but to his family as well. His young son was being outright annoying, but the way he disciplined him wasn’t harsh. It was assertive and sincere. The love and care he showed them, I feel, really reflects the love Jesus shows us.

A sidenote – Ajan’s son is named Pray. At least, that’s what it sounds like in English. I think that’s a brilliant name.

En route home. This is the airport. I like the blue tree.

As I mentioned earlier, we can’t do much alone. It’s only God who works through us that can do miracles. I’m quite blessed by the country and its people. Going to keep the ministry there in prayer. It would be good if you could, too. (:

Oh! Mostly, I'm going to use this blog to put up anything interesting I type.
